Making Faces - Expressive Drawing with Charcoal

Join us for a brief but exciting exploration into drawing portraits in charcoal. This workshop is an introduction to basic techniques in drawing faces, learning how to achieve likeness and expression in a portrait.
Using vine and compressed charcoal, putty rubber, chalk and fingers we will look at how to construct a face, considering proportion, form and tone to capture facial characteristics. It is hoped that what you learn will help you in observational and drawing skills and will be a good
foundation to painting portraits as well as using charcoal as a medium.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as improvers.

Charcoal is a wonderful drawing medium that offers deep velvety blacks and subtle light greys. It lends itself to dramatic subjects and themes. In this workshop, we will explore the theme of "industrial"- whether that is an industrial landscape/ townscape or a still life comprised of mechanical objects. 

Choosing to work from images of industrial scenes or from a real still life, we will explore the magic of charcoal. You will learn more about tonal values, contrast, perspective and techniques employing a putty eraser and brushing powdered charcoal and more.

You will learn about the proportions of the face and how to obtain a likeness by making preliminary sketches and tonal drawings before preparing your canvas and making a tonal under-painting. You will begin with colour preparation and mixing, then applying paint using brushes and palette knife. It will be a chance to explore various techniques and approaches to painting in acrylics and in capturing a likeness in your portrait. Acrylic paints are extremely versatile and can be used watered down and applied as thin layers of colour or applied thickly as impasto. The methods and techniques demonstrated on the course could also help when progressing to oils.
